These teacups have been part of my family for years.

They’re Mikasa stoneware, with that heavier, sturdy feel that makes them seem like they were meant to be used every day.

The colors lean more warm and autumnal than delicate—soft cream with a golden-brown rim, and those muted yellow-orange flowers with touches of green that feel earthy and lived-in.

They’re part of the Garden Club style pieces from the late 70s, with that slightly speckled finish and simple floral pattern that never feels overly polished or modern.

There’s something about them that just feels grounded.

Why I Wasn’t Using Them

They’re too small for the way I drink coffee now.

And I’m not much of a hot tea person.

So they ended up sitting in the cabinet…
not being used, but also not something I wanted to get rid of.

Because they mean something.

The Idea That Changed It

My grandma has always used things in simple, practical ways.

And one thing she’s done for years is use cups for plants.

Not in a styled, perfect way—just naturally.

So I thought…

Why not do the same?

Turning Them Into Something I See Every Day

I started placing small succulents inside the teacups.

Nothing complicated. No overthinking.

Just a simple plant, sitting inside something that already meant something to me.

And suddenly, they weren’t tucked away anymore.

They were out.

Visible.
Used.
Part of everyday life again.

Why I Love This So Much

It feels like a mix of everything I care about at home:

  • keeping things simple
  • using what you already have
  • holding onto meaningful pieces
  • and not saving things “for later”

There’s something really special about taking an object that’s been part of your family and letting it keep being part of your life—just in a slightly different way.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

These aren’t styled perfectly.

They’re not part of a big decor setup.

It’s just a teacup… with a plant in it.

But that’s kind of the point.

A Simple Idea to Try

If you have:

  • old teacups
  • inherited dishes
  • or pieces you love but don’t use

You don’t have to keep them stored away.

You can bring them back into your home in a way that actually fits your life now.

Even something as simple as a small plant can do that.

Closing

I think of my grandma when I see them.

But now, instead of sitting in a cabinet…

they’re part of my home again.
