When we bought this house, the dining room wasn’t just “dated.”

It was filthy.

We purchased it from hoarders, and I mean that literally. The walls had to be mopped. The floors needed serious cleaning. The ceiling fixture was… horrifying. There was no charm, no warmth, no vision — just layers of grime and a lot of work ahead of us.

That’s why we were able to get such a good deal.

But walking into that space, I didn’t have some grand design plan. I just wanted clean.

Phase One: Survival Mode

At first, the goal wasn’t aesthetic. It was sanitary.

We scrubbed the walls. Cleaned everything. Replaced the disgusting ceiling lamp with something — honestly, anything — better.

When I chose the first updates, I didn’t have a table yet. I didn’t have the Romanian hutch. I didn’t even know what direction I wanted to go.

So I picked safe.

White. Neutral. Cool tones that would “match anything.”

The room became clean… but it also became flat. The walls leaned bluish. The lighting was industrial and disconnected. Everything felt like it was trying to work with everything else — but nothing actually belonged together.

It wasn’t horrible anymore.

But it wasn’t beautiful either.

The Turning Point: Finding My Vision

Everything changed once I found the table.

Then the hutch.

That handmade Romanian hutch shifted something in me. It brought warmth, history, and depth into the room. Suddenly I didn’t want “match everything.”

I wanted cohesion.

I wanted warmth. Texture. Softness. Character.

I realized the in-between phase wasn’t a mistake — it was me figuring out my style in real time.

Reworking the Space with Intention

Here’s what finally brought it together:

A Woven Pendant Instead of Industrial Lighting

The original updated fixture (the one I chose in survival mode) still felt cold. Swapping it for a woven pendant completely changed the energy. It softened the room instantly and tied into the wood tones instead of fighting them.

Lighting truly sets the emotional tone of a room.

-Curtains for Warmth

Bare windows kept the room feeling stark. Adding curtains framed everything and brought much-needed softness against all the white walls.

-Restoring the Hutch

Instead of replacing this old piece, I honored it.

  • Oiled the wood to bring back its richness
  • Cleaned the antique glass with a mix of acetone and water (this removes that cloudy film old glass gets)
  • Added woven-look contact paper to the back so the pieces inside stand out

It went from blending in to becoming the anchor of the room.

A Jute Rug to Ground It

Texture underfoot made a huge difference. The natural fibers warmed up the space and connected the woven lighting to the wood furniture.

The Detail That Changed Everything: Fresh Flowers

After all the big changes, the thing that made it feel alive?

Fresh flowers.

You can absolutely use artificial stems — and I will for longevity and budget — but there is something about a real floral centerpiece in the spring that shifts the entire mood of a room.

It adds movement. Life. A sense of care.

Even simple grocery store blooms elevate the whole space.

Where It Started vs. Where It Landed

Started:

  • Filthy walls we had to mop
  • A truly awful ceiling lamp
  • No direction, just survival
  • Cool-toned white trying to match “everything”

Now:

  • Warm, layered textures
  • Lighting that feels intentional
  • A restored heirloom-style hutch
  • Soft curtains
  • A grounded jute rug
  • Fresh florals that make it feel loved

This room didn’t transform overnight.

It evolved as I did.

From just wanting clean…

To wanting cohesive.

To finally understanding my style.

And honestly? That journey might be my favorite part.
